The summer workshops offered through SFA's JacksTeach and the STEM Education and Research Center will be back in June delivering outstanding biology and chemistry workshops for high school teachers in addition to a Science Safety and Lab Management for middle and high school science teachers, department leads, and instructional coaches.
Biologist Dr. Jo Taylor will deliver half-day, TEKS-based inquiry workshops exploring photosynthesis, catalase enzyme activity, gel electrophoresis, and fetal pig dissection June 8-11. Teachers participating in these workshops will return to their classrooms prepared to lead these investigations with their own students.
Clinical Instructor and Master Science Teacher, Mindy Wurtz, will walk participants through three immersive STEAM workshops based on the chemistry of Fresco paintings, cyanotypes, and metal patinas June 22-24. Attendees will take a deep dive into the chemistry of each process during the morning session, then spend a studio afternoon producing examples of each artistic process. These interdisciplinary workshops will provide rigorous TEKS- and NGSS-aligned classroom applications and scalable lab ideas.
On June 25th, a crash course in Lab Safety and Management is offered for middle and high school science teachers, department leads, and instructional coaches of all science disciplines. In addition to safety in the laboratory, important topics covered will include money saving chemical prep, safe storage and disposal, risk management strategies, equipment use and maintenance, and legal and ethical considerations. Designed to prepare and build confidence, this course is a must for new teachers and teachers working out of their primary area of concentration.
